Introduction / History

The Kovai people live on Umboi and Rooke Islands in the Siassi district of Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea. Their communities are situated in a region shaped by volcanic terrain, forested slopes, and coastal settlements. The Kovai language, a Papuan language of the Finisterre–Huon family, is traditionally spoken in these island communities. Generations of Kovai families have lived in this area, maintaining close ties to their land, their clan structures, and the surrounding islands of the Siassi region.

What Are Their Lives Like?

The Kovai people typically reside in small villages scattered along the coasts and inland areas of Umboi and Rooke Islands. Their livelihoods often center on gardening, fishing, and gathering forest resources, with subsistence practices shaped by the fertile volcanic soils and access to the sea. Many families cultivate staple crops, tend small gardens near their homes, and fish in the surrounding waters.

Community life usually relies on cooperation among extended families, with shared responsibilities in gardening, house?building, and cultural practices. Travel between islands is common, often by canoe or small motorboats, linking Kovai villages with other communities in the Siassi region.

What Are Their Beliefs?

Christianity is the primary religious identity among the Kovai people, with many identifying with Protestant traditions and participating in local church life.

Before the spread of Christian teaching, local beliefs typically involved respect for spiritual forces associated with the natural environment, as well as ancestral customs that shaped community identity. These older traditions varied from village to village and are best described in simple, modest terms. Today, Christian worship and biblical teaching are significant influences on moral values, family life, and community gatherings.

What Are Their Needs?

The Kovai people, like many rural island communities in Papua New Guinea, may face challenges related to limited access to formal education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. Sustaining their language and cultural knowledge remains important for community identity.

Spiritually, ongoing engagement with Scripture, encouragement for local church leaders, and opportunities for discipleship can help strengthen the faith of believers. Support for families and for developing strong, Christ?centered leadership within local churches is also valuable for long?term spiritual growth.
